I wrote a blog a few months ago regarding the presidential election and the Democratic nomination, Barack Obama. After Hillary Clinton lost the Democratic primaries I was confused as to who I was going to vote for in this important election since I had my full support behind her. I was either going to vote for Obama or not vote at all. Well, I already sent a ballot in with my vote for Obama. Honestly, my decision to vote for him was in large part due to the selection of the vice presidential candidates and also how well he performed in his debates against John McCain. Then it became personal for me and my family and I knew the right thing to do was to vote for Barack Obama.
Now, I stated in the blog a few months back my reasons for why the selection of Joe Biden as Obama’s running mate was a smart choice. However, the choice of McCain’s running mate, Alaska governor Sarah Palin, confirmed for me the wrong choice for president would be John McCain. Choosing Sarah Palin might have sounded like a good idea at the time since she was a woman who could lure Clinton supporters over to the Republican side and she was young. Now, it has proven to be the opposite: a really dumb idea which people believe will cost McCain the election.
In interviews and speeches Palin has done since being announced McCain’s running mate, she has proven time and time again that she is not ready for the job. As a matter of fact, I am starting to wonder how she got elected governor of a small state like Alaska. In some of the questions presented to Palin I could have answered them better than her and I am just an average person who has no business running for political office. This is not sexism either, which is a term Republicans are throwing out there. This is about Palin not being ready for the job. Hillary Clinton was ready for the job.
I would be scared to death if McCain became President of the United States. My fears would be towards Palin. McCain is 72 years old and would be the oldest president elected. Hypothetically speaking, let’s say he wins on Tuesday and then goes for re-election in 2012 and wins a second term. He would be 80 years old by the time he gets out of office if he even makes it to that age. If I am not mistaken the life expectancy of males is the late 70’s nowadays. This leads me to my point: If McCain wins there is a very high chance that Sarah Palin would eventually be President of the United States. McCain does not even have to pass away for this to happen; he just has to become ill. I do not want to even imagine what our country would be like if Palin was running it.
Another reason to vote for Obama: Our economy is in a big mess right now; the worst since the Great Depression. I feel that Barack Obama is the right candidate to lift us out of the hole we are in. The main reason: he is going to fight for the middle-class and end the useless war we have been in for 5 years. McCain is not about fighting for middle-class families; he is about protecting the wealthy and big businesses. Pretty much the same as our current president. The same will just give us 4 more years of people losing their homes and jobs. Republicans do not care about people like me. The 3 greatest presidents we ever had happened to be Democrat who cared about struggling families: President Bill Clinton, President Kennedy and President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Republicans are complaining that Obama will raise taxes. Yes, he will raise taxes on the people who make good money and who can afford to pay more taxes. He will give to the families and individuals who are struggling to make their mortgage payments, put food on the table and save for their children’s education. Why should he give a break to the rich?
So, if you want a president who will make a positive change for our country and who will fight for more jobs and for people who are in tough times right now, then the choice on November 4 should be simple.

Another Year, Another Bad Show
The 25th annual MTV Video Music Awards aired last Sunday night and once again it was another disappointing show. Remember when the video music awards used to be fun to watch? Well, apparently that was the good ole’ days.
Let’s start off with the obvious: Britney Spears. Last year, she performed and made a fool out of herself by stumbling across the stage like an unprepared idiot. This year, however, she did not perform (good idea Britney) but opened the show by introducing performer Rihanna. Spears looked a lot better than last year and seemed to be doing much better. In other words, she appeared sane. That was not the problem though. Up until this video music awards Spears had never won any of the awards she was nominated for. Well, her video for the song “Piece of Me” (she made it when she was mentally unstable) was nominated 3 times including video of the year. I was upset to witness her win all 3 of the awards, especially video of the year. I will put it to you this way: Spears’ video sucked. The videos that she was nominated for several years ago (when she was relevant in the music scene) were twice as better and yet she never won then. Yes, the competition was tougher back then since artists were actually making great videos. However, most of the videos she was up against this year were hands down better videos. So, I came to only one possible answer for Spears winning all of a sudden. Either they completely lost their mind or MTV felt sorry for her and wanted her to get back on top. They had to have had some kind of an agreement with Spears to get her to open the show again. Why? I don’t know. Maybe they feel guilty for last year’s humiliating performance and want to make it up to her. Rather than having Spears make a comeback on some other award show, they figured this was their opportunity…also an opportunity to boost the ratings.
Now, I ranted about this in my blog last year, Video Killed the Radio Star, regarding the MTV Video Music Awards: MTV does not play videos anymore; it is all about reality shows for them. I can count on 2 fingers the times they probably played Spears’ “Piece of Me” video. I am sure half the people watching were not aware of the video or even heard of that song. This brings me to another point: Her last album featuring “Piece of Me” received horrible reviews and probably her worst album to date. What was MTV thinking? Obviously not about the quality of videos. I remember when video of the year winners had an impact. Hers did not. She might have deserved to win the best pop video considering she was the only pop artist nominated in that category, but best female video and video of the year, no way. And I know for a fact that I am not the only one complaining about this.
MTV also received criticism for the host they chose for the show: British comedian Russell Brand. He is mostly unknown in the United States which makes MTV’s decision questionable. However, the sad thing is that Brand was probably the best part of the show. He was funny in his own kind of way. Yes, I think he went too far with constantly making fun of the Jonas Brother’s purity rings. He also angered people (I’m guessing they were Republicans) by calling President Bush “a retarded cowboy” and saying in Britain Bush would not be trusted with a pair of scissors. I understand it is not politically correct to use the word “retarded.” Therefore, he should have stuck with idiot or moron. He was right though. People complain that since Russell Brand is not a citizen of the United States and therefore not allowed to vote, he has no right promoting Barack Obama and making fun of our current president. Get real people. We make fun of our president. Quite frankly, it is embarrassing to have a president like Bush. It is pretty apparent from what Brand said that other countries look at us and laugh in the fact that we allowed Bush to be president for not one, but two terms.
Brand also joked about John McCain’s running mate for Vice President, Sarah Palin, and how her 17-year-old daughter was pregnant. I think it is fair game. You know that if it was a nominee on the Democratic ticket, the Republicans would be all over it and would not have a problem with comedians cracking jokes about it.
So, to sum it all up, this year’s MTV Video Music Awards was met with a lot of criticism and disappointment. I heard that their ratings went up this year. The Tough, Yet Simple, Decision
As I’m writing this blog today I did not think I would have to make this decision. Come November 4, Election Day, I figured I would easily mark my ballot for Hillary Clinton for President of the United States. Seven months ago when Clinton was front runner I thought without a doubt, as did many other people, that Hillary Clinton would be the Democratic nomination for president and this week she would have been the one delivering her acceptance speech, not Barack Obama.
Since this is not the case, now I am faced with whether to vote for Obama, whom I originally did not support, or not vote at all. The main reason why I registered to vote in my current home state of Arizona is because I wanted Hillary Clinton, a woman and wife of one of the greatest presidents we ever had, in the White House. She is very capable of beating a Republican (John McCain) in my opinion. On a side note, if I receive a jury duty notice just because I’m registered to vote, I am going to really be ticked off.
Well, there is another choice: John McCain who just yesterday picked a woman, yet inexperienced, to be his running mate. But there would have to be something seriously wrong with me to vote for a Republican. He is not as conservative as Bush though, but maybe if he agreed to end the war in Iraq as president then I actually might think about it. But who wants 4 more years of Bush policies? You have to be an idiot or filthy rich to want that. McCain is from Arizona (a Republican state) so I wonder if my vote would even matter anyways.
However, after listening to Hillary Clinton’s speech Tuesday night at the Democratic National Convention where she threw her support out to Obama, I just might have to get over her loss and take her advice: We (Democrats) need to take back the White House and make sure a Republican does not run our country for another 4 years. Our country cannot afford it. Clinton did make a good point in her speech when she asked her supporters if they were in this election just for her or for the issues that she and other Democrats were fighting for. The issues are not small either. Now, I’m fortunate enough to have a job where they provide affordable health care. I am also fortunate enough that I drive a Honda Civic and the gas prices are not affecting me as much as other people. However, the housing crisis is affecting me and with a Republican in office who does not seem to care about the lower to middle class families, I do not see how it can improve. Or any issues for that matter. Not to mention, the question of whether or not there will be any social security left when I hit that age. Al Gore’s “lock box” plan when he ran for president was actually not a bad idea. Plus, the war in Iraq has been dragging on for 5 years and costing us a fortune and killing soldiers who are basically dying for no reason. However, I do see an end in sight to this unnecessary war if Barack Obama is elected President of the United States.

Biden is great when it comes to foreign policy issues, he was the senator behind the Violence Against Women Act, he supports gay rights and is against gun ownership. During his convention speech Wednesday night, Biden proved that he would make a great Vice President, running with someone who does not have as much experience. Plus, even though I do not like to say it, our country is still very racist. It would not be entirely impossible, since there were already threats at the recent convention, that Obama becomes the target for assassination. We saw this with Martin Luther King Jr. and President John F. Kennedy in the 60’s whose killings were both linked to race and civil rights.
So, we will have to wait longer until a woman makes it to the White House. However, as I mentioned above, there are more important issues to think about other than that: Our future, which I guess pretty much makes this a simple decision.

NBA Finals Preview
If you did not know any better you would think it was the 1980’s. And I am not talking about the New Kids reunion again. I am talking about the upcoming NBA finals between the 80’s rivals the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics. Everyone loved watching the Lakers and Celtics in the 80’s competing for championships and now two decades later we will have a chance to see it again. This time instead of Magic Johnson and Larry Bird competing for a championship, it will be Kobe Bryant and Kevin Garnett.
It has been four years since the Lakers have been to the finals, however, for the Celtics they have not been to the finals since 1987. Coincidentally, they played the Lakers in the 1987 championship and lost to them in six games. It was fun going back to my Lakers DVD this weekend and watching one of the pivotal games from that classic series where Magic Johnson ended the Celtics’ season with that “baby hook” shot. There are obviously different players in this championship round, but I do not think the outcome will be much different.
I did not think the Celtics would be in the finals this year. In the last round I predicted the Pistons would beat them in six games, but it was just the opposite. The Celtics beat them in six games because they finally won a couple games on the road. I emphasize the word “finally.” The Lakers closed out the Spurs faster than I originally predicted…they only needed five games to eliminate the defending champions.
So now it has come down to this…the Lakers and the Celtics fighting it out once again. Even though I predicted the Pistons to win last round, there would be nothing sweeter than for the Lakers to beat the team with the best regular season record, the team that was expected to be in this position since the beginning of the season and the team that has a long history with the Lakers.
Here is my prediction for the championship round: The Lakers will beat the Celtics in five games in this best of seven series. Now the Lakers are favored to win the series even without home court advantage, but they are not predicted to do it in less than six games. My feeling is that Kobe Bryant is just too hungry and he can taste his fourth championship. He is the best player in the game and no one can stop this guy. The Lakers also have the momentum going into this series since they just knocked out the defending champions. Their confidence should be high. They are a young team as opposed to the Celtics. They also have gone into other teams’ buildings and won important games.
Like I said above, the Celtics are supposed to be here. After the additions of Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen they were automatically favored to win the championship going into the season. As for the Lakers, people wondered if they would even make the playoffs and if Kobe Bryant would still be on the team. As I see it, if the Celtics lose their season would be a tremendous failure no matter how many games they won in the regular season. If the Lakers lose, they still accomplished more than anyone could have imagined and they will be the automatic favorites to win it all next year when their center is expected to come back healthy.

Basketball Playoffs: Conference Finals
The championship round is getting closer and closer. The Western and Eastern conference finals have finally been decided. I predicted two out of two correct on my semifinals predictions (the Western conference semifinals). The Lakers second round series against the Utah Jazz was indeed tougher for the Lakers, but they still won the series in six games making their first conference finals appearance since 2004.
The New Orleans Hornets gave the defending champions San Antonio Spurs a run for their money pushing the series to a final and seventh game. However, I was correct when I said the Spurs’ experience will help win game seven and lead them to the Western Conference finals once again.
Over in the other conference, the Detroit Pistons beat the Orlando Magic but quicker than I expected. The Boston Celtics beat the Cleveland Cavaliers as I predicted, but they had to do it in seven games considering the fact that they still could not win any road games.

Boston Celtics vs. Detroit Pistons: I know that everyone wants to see a repeat of the 1980’s with a Celtics and Lakers Finals match-up, but I have doubts that it will happen this year. Basketball Playoffs: Semifinals Predictions
The second round (semifinals) of the basketball playoffs are just getting underway this weekend. My first round predictions were not bad at all…I got 4 out of 8 correct. Just as I predicted, the Lakers knocked out the Nuggets in only 4 games and the Jazz eliminated the Rockets in 6. Their reward is having to face the Lakers in the second round. The Phoenix Suns and the Dallas Mavericks were eliminated quicker than I thought. The Pistons and the Magic made it to the second round, but unfortunately the Wizards did not. The most surprising first round match-up was between the Boston Celtics and the Atlanta Hawks. Most people predicted a sweep since the #1 seed Celtics were going against a team who only won 37 games in the regular season. Well, the Hawks fought, won all of their home games and pushed the series to a game 7. The Celtics came out on top of course, but showed their vulnerability.
Here are my second round predictions:
The Eastern Conference
Boston Celtics vs. Cleveland Cavaliers: Even though the Celtics had to fight it out with the Hawks, I still predict the Celtics will beat the Cavaliers. Celtics will win series 4-2.
Detroit Pistons vs. Orlando Magic: Pistons win series 4-3.
The Western Conference
Los Angeles Lakers vs. Utah Jazz: This match-up will be tougher for the Lakers, but they will come out on top. Lakers win series 4-2.
New Orleans Hornets vs. San Antonio Spurs: This is a tough series to predict. I originally wanted to go with the Hornets because of their young team and they have home court advantage. However, in the end I will have to go with the defending NBA champions Spurs because of their experience. They will have to fight in this one though to the last game. Spurs win series 4-3.
Here are my second round predictions:
The Eastern Conference
Boston Celtics vs. Cleveland Cavaliers: Even though the Celtics had to fight it out with the Hawks, I still predict the Celtics will beat the Cavaliers. Celtics will win series 4-2.
Detroit Pistons vs. Orlando Magic: Pistons win series 4-3.
The Western Conference
Los Angeles Lakers vs. Utah Jazz: This match-up will be tougher for the Lakers, but they will come out on top. Lakers win series 4-2.

Still Hangin' Tough
Fourteen years after their break up, one of the biggest boy bands in history are getting back together. The New Kids on the Block. The five guys from Boston, who were formed in 1984 as teenagers and shot to superstardom after their 1988 release of Hangin’ Tough, recently announced a new album and tour. It has been a long time but those screaming fans, known as “blockheads” back in the day, are still out there as proven on the New Kids’ recent appearance on the Today show.
I was one of those “blockheads” who became a fan around 9-years-old and was lucky enough to see them in concert when I was 10-years-old at the height of their popularity. (Even still have the ticket stub). Yes, I was the fan with the posters on the wall, collected magazines about them, got up every Saturday morning to watch their cartoon, had the t-shirts, earrings, even a board game, and of course had a favorite New Kid. The New Kids were to me what The Beatles were to my mom.
Then the backlash started to happen and critics thought they were overexposed. And then the Milli Vanilli scandal broke which escalated the backlash, not just for the New Kids but for every artist who did pop music at that time. If Milli Vanilli were fake well then critics assumed everyone else was fake. Their Arsenio Hall show appearance during the backlash proved the critics wrong.
When the New Kids came back with a new album called Face The Music (a completely underrated album), the music scene had changed. The fans looked to other performers while alternative music and gangster rap became popular at that time.
I do not think they deserved the backlash and the criticism. They were five talented guys who did not ask to be overexposed. All they wanted to do was perform for their fans. On top of that they were good role models as well who were clean cut and seemed like down to earth guys. Their lyrics were not inappropriate and they did not sing about bitches in their music which is what you would find in gangster rap. Unfortunately, music fans preferred that type of music over the New Kids at the time of their break up. I admit I own rap albums now that I am an adult, but if I have children I would never allow them to listen to that stuff; instead I would get out my New Kids and Michael Jackson albums. My point: that was the difference between the New Kids and other performers at the time and why they had so many fans who were young girls like myself. Parents trusted this group.
I am happy about this reunion. I think that anyone is glad when a once successful group reunites after so many years. It takes me back to my childhood and makes me remember all the good music they brought back in the late 80’s/early 90’s. You cannot help but have their hit songs “You Got It (The Right Stuff)” or “Hangin’ Tough” stuck in your head when you hear about this group. They paved the way for boy bands like the Backstreet Boys and N’sync when pop music exploded again in the late 90’s. It is funny because I never became a fan of N’sync or the Backstreet Boys. I always said they were not the New Kids on the Block. I also knew that the New Kids would be the only group who would ever have my heart.
So, get ready for a comeback. They may be pushing 40 but the New Kids on the Block are still hangin’ tough and the “blockheads” are out in full force once again, including me. :)
